Frequently asked questions

Q: What is micro-needling and how does it work?

A: Micro-needling procedures involve the use of an automated medical device, consisting of several tiny needles, which create micro-punctures within the epidermis when applied to the skin’s surface. The puncturing of the skin ignites a “healing response”, causing a release of growth factors which signal tissue repair, resulting in increased collagen and elastin production and more youthful skin. Micro-needling treatments are performed with the administration of hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C serums or - as outlined below - with Platelet Rich Plasma. Dr. Herman proudly uses Collagen P.I.N., an automated FDA-approved micro-needling device.

Q: What conditions are best treated with micro-needling procedures?

A: Micro-needling treatments are effective at reducing the appearance of fine lines, sagging skin, hyper-pigmentation, acne (aka atrophic) scars, stretch marks and is very useful at preventing signs of aging and maintaining a youthful appearance. This is a good first-line, anti-aging treatment to try before considering other, less natural treatments, such as botox or dermal fillers. Many clinical studies have proven that microneedling is more effective or as powerful as other methods including laser resurfacing, chemical peels or dermabrasion, but with very little down time or damage to the skin.

Q: How many treatments are needed to see results from micro-needling?

A: For best results, a series of 3-6 monthly treatments are recommended, depending on treatment goals. Some patients report immediate improvement in skin appearance, but most notice initial improvement 1 month after first treatment. Each treatment provides additive improvement to skin appearance.

Q: What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma, otherwise known as PRP, is a solution derived from one’s own blood and created by concentrating platelets into a solution via a PRP-specific centrifuge. PRP is considered a regenerative substance as the platelets release growth factors, which stimulate production of new cells and tissues in the treated area. When PRP is injected into an area, it “activates” by releasing growth factors, which initiate the cascade of tissue repair and regeneration, resulting in improved skin quality, new hair growth, or renewal of injured connective tissue.

Q: What is Platelet Rich Plasma Skin Rejuvenation?

A: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Skin Rejuvenation takes skin restoration to the next level by combining micro-needling with the regenerative power of PRP. PRP Skin Rejuvenation treatments stimulate cellular regeneration, correct damaged tissue, and reduce inflammation in the treated areas. The result is better skin quality, including improved skin tone, texture, and complexion. There is a “Basic” and “Advanced” PRP Skin Rejuvenation procedure.

Q: What is the difference between the “Basic” and “Advanced” PRP Skin Rejuvenation procedures?

A: The “Basic” procedure involves micro-needling with surface application of PRP. The puncturing of the skin helps the PRP penetrate into deeper layers. PRP and micro-needling have an additive effect to provide the greatest impact on skin regeneration. This treatment is ideal for individuals with mild to moderate signs of aging, scarring, hyper-pigmentation and skin sagging or thinning, which naturally occurs with aging and over time with recurrent Botox treatments.

The “Advanced” procedure involves the combination of micro-needling, surface application of PRP, along with deeper PRP injections into more prominent skin defects such as deeper wrinkles, scars, more pronounced sagging and/or hollowed appearance. The treatment is ideal for individuals with more pronounced skin deficits, such as prominent wrinkles and scarring.  Commonly treated areas include “11” lines or between brow creasing, “laugh lines” and “Marionette lines”.

Q: Which areas are treated with PRP Skin Rejuvenation?

A: PRP skin rejuvenation is typically performed on the face and is a more subtle and natural alternative to other common cosmetic procedures, such as dermal filers. It also can help undo the skin-thinning effect which occurs with long-term botox treatments. Other commonly treated areas include neck, chest, abdomen and hands.

Q: How many treatments are needed to see results from PRP Skin Rejuvenation?

A: For best results, a series of 3 monthly treatments are recommended, depending on treatment goals. Some patients report immediate improvement in skin appearance, but most notice initial improvement 1 month after first treatment. Each treatment provides additive improvement to skin appearance.

Q: How long do the results last?

A: Improvement in skin can last up to 1-2 years dependent on health status and age. Annual maintenance treatments are recommended.

Q: What is PRP Hair Restoration

A: PRP Hair Restoration is a non-invasive, natural treatment for thinning hair and/or balding. It may be used for hair loss caused by hormonal issues, aging, and chronic medical conditions. It is most effective when used in conjunction with treatments addressing the root cause of the hair loss. The procedure is similar to PRP Skin Rejuvenation process, outlined above, with PRP being injected throughout the scalp. The PRP releases several growth factors, which stimulate under-active hair follicles to begin to regenerating new cells, resulting in new hair growth.

Q: How many treatments are recommended for best results?

A: A series of 3 treatments is typically recommended for best results. Each treatment is spaced 3 months apart, to mimic the typical hair growth cycle.

Q: What results are expected with PRP Hair Restoration?

A: At the least, this treatment helps prevent and slow down further hair loss over the next 1-2 years. Many people experience mild to moderate growth of new hair after 2-3 consecutive treatments. Annual maintenance treatments are recommended for some individuals to maintain results.
